Cessna lengthened the fuselage again for the CJ3, fitted Williams FJ44-3A engines and a larger wing, and kept single-pilot certification. Why the Cessna Citation CJ3 Fits Mexico
From the US Southeast and Midwest the CJ3’s range changes which Mexico cities are a single-leg trip. Miami to Cancun at roughly 750 nautical miles, Houston to Mexico City via Toluca at approximately 1,000 nautical miles, and Dallas to Guadalajara are all inside the CJ3’s envelope with a realistic payload. The CJ2 stops short of some of those with a full load.
Toluca, the primary private jet gateway for Greater Mexico City, is an Airport of Entry with 24-hour customs on-site. At 8,460 feet of elevation, warm-afternoon density altitude can exceed 11,000 feet, and a CJ3 with a full cabin and bags from a sea-level US departure should be planned against actual operator performance data rather than the headline range.
The baggage compartment is the reason this aircraft beats a Beechjet on Mexico leisure trips. A family of six headed into Los Cabos with a week’s luggage fits without a conversation. Los Cabos International sits at 374 feet of elevation, so density altitude is not a factor there the way it is at Toluca or Guadalajara.
