Cessna Citation CJ1

The Cessna Citation CJ1 is the entry point into jet charter for short Mexico trips, a light jet well suited to US border crossings and domestic hops where cabin comfort matters but the route does not justify a larger aircraft.

Cessna built the CJ1 as a compact single-pilot certified light jet with two Williams FJ44 turbofans. It seats five to six passengers, cruises around 389 knots to 41,000 feet, and carries a range of roughly 1,300 nautical miles. Every Cessna Citation CJ1 we arrange flies with an operator certificated under FAR Part 135, the FAA rules for on-demand, for-hire charter.

Why the Cessna Citation CJ1 Fits Mexico

Houston to Monterrey at roughly 430 miles is the route this aircraft is built for. A US border crossing to Mexico’s largest industrial hub in under two hours at jet speed: that is the value the CJ1 delivers and why it appears on quote sheets for this corridor regularly.

The range limit is real. Mexico City via Toluca from Houston or Dallas is a stretch goal, not a comfortable mission. The CJ1 is at its best on Mexico domestic hops and short US border crossings; for anything beyond 1,000 nautical miles, a larger jet makes more sense.

Toluca’s 8,460-foot elevation requires performance planning on any light jet at or near maximum payload. The CJ1’s operator confirms takeoff figures before the trip. On a light passenger load the aircraft handles Toluca without issue; at maximum the math changes and we put that to the operator before confirming.

Vetting Behind Every Trip

Every operator, aircraft, and crew goes through our internal due diligence before we present any options. Our internal standards meet or exceed what the FAA requires:

  • FAR Part 135 charter operators for traditional private aircraft, or FAR Part 121 for airliner-size and group trips (or the foreign equivalent on international legs)
  • Operator subscription to Wyvern and ARGUS reviewed where the operator participates; reports may be provided on request.
  • Pilot experience and operator incident history reviewed before we recommend an aircraft.
  • Fewer than 60 brokers worldwide hold Premium Wyvern Broker Member status, and Air Charter Advisors is one of them.
